HISTORY

Sometime in the 13th century the land at Twissle, Thorn and Farnstree was bequeathed to Otham Priory. It is thought the mill belonged to Warbleton Manor and may well have been 'the mill' in Heathfield.  In about 1522 Robert Roger rented Twissell at a cost of 12d and 1lb of pepper.  In 1633 Christopher Warnet, a gent, had a barn and a watermill called Twissell.  This was bequeathed to Jabez and John Warnet in 1688.

According to researches by the Warbleton Local History Group, for which we are much indebted, the Mill has been in operation for well over 300 years, until tragedy struck in the late 1920's or early 1930'3, when a fire destroyed much of the building.  Before the advent of windmills, a watermill was an essential resource for any community.
