During the war, Brian was evacuated, but returned to Eastbourne to live with the Chrismas family at Melbourne Road. he qualified as a cabinet maker and went on to work as a carpenter on building sites, subsequently starting his own building business in Seaford going by the name of West Construction.

He married his childhood sweetheart, Greta Rummary, and raised a family in Seaford, later moving to Milton Street, where he extended a small cottage, making it quite comfortable for the family, being blessed with two daughters, Debbie and Sharon. Unfortunately, his first daughter had medical problems and died at an early age.

Brian retired from building after recovering from a stroke brought about from years of heavy smoking and drinking. He'd recovered from bankruptcy several years before and vowed to give up his high pressure lifestyle. Once recovered, he found himself with nothing to do and ran for office via his Conservative membership, to become elected the local member for East Dean, representing them as their district councillor................
