Many schools encourage their pupils to take an active interest in technology from an early age.  Hawkes Farm School at Hailsham in East Sussex ran a competition for their year 6 pupils (10 year olds) to design a robot.  The picture below shows one design for a "general purpose machine" which was drafted on a computer using AutoCad, after some instruction.  In fact the pupil was given just 30 minutes training, after which she could draw circles, ellipses and lines with some accuracy.

Designers do it better with Solar Cola

Autocad is the industry standard program for designers all over the world.  Provided you have some basic draughting skills, usually gained at school using paper, pencils, ruler and a compass, it does not take long to master this program.
